Hey Excellent typecast. With regards to the ribbon vibrator not raising enough on the lower setting, I discovered on my Deluxe Model 5 that the spool shafts just needed to be cleaned up to spin more freely as they were pulling back on the ribbon enough to tighten it and keep it from raising just that little bit.
In this case, part of the vibrator is broken off, so if it's set normally it won't print the letter completely. You are spot on about the drag though; I've found that it'll interfere with the pawl mechanism as well.
Nice overview! It's also worth mentioning the model actually called "Streamliner," which uses a horizontal carriage return lever. I love the look of all these typewriters, especially the glossy ones.
